Simpler, Better, Faster? Evaluation of an Index-Based Nutrition App

Abstract

Mobile applications have become a popular tool to support healthy nutrition behavior. However, tracking and evaluating a person's diet is a complex task. Current tools often require highly detailed information about a user’s daily food consumption, which is very time-consuming. It is suspected that it is one of the reasons for the high dropout rates in the health app sector. Therefore, we developed a simplified version of a nutrition diary app. This mobile application collects data based on the German HEI-DEGS1 index to enable a quick recording of the nutrition while providing feedback on a person's diet and its quality. A subsequently conducted user evaluation with 25 participants for seven consecutive days showed a quick learning curve regarding tracking times with a final average required tracking time of just over a minute as well as an overall positive perception of usability and user experience.
