45 years of social work

Anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Social Work at Landshut University of Applied Sciences

This semester, the Faculty of Social Work is celebrating 45 years since it was founded. A programme in social work was launched in the winter semester of 1973/1974 at the Schönbrunn site, which at that time was a satellite site of the Weihenstephan University of Applied Sciences.

This anniversary was duly celebrated on 26 October 2018.
In his welcome speech Professor Karl Stoffel, President of Landshut University of Applied Sciences, outlined current developments at the university as a whole. The present Dean of the Faculty, Professor Borrmann, then provided a short review of how the faculty has evolved during his time in office so far.

"It was a successful event with many interesting conversations. I am excited and looking forward to seeing how the Faculty of Social Work at Landshut University of Applied Sciences continues to evolve," said Professor Barbara Thiessen, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Work. She moderated the subsequent podium discussion on "Developments in social work as a profession over the last four decades" in which the current dean and former deans participated.
Guests received a good insight into the faculty's history, from the origins of the faculty and the challenges associated with setting up an independent degree programme to the problems that arose when converting from diploma courses to Bachelor's and Master's programmes. There were lots of anecdotes, some of them funny, from past meetings of the faculty council which had been packed with discussion.

Following the podium discussion guests – who consisted of teaching staff, students, university staff and alumni – had the opportunity to converse with old acquaintances and to make new contacts.
