Apply in English - this is how it works!

Last Wednesday, students learned about the differences of an application in German and English.

Many of our students would like to go abroad during their studies and complete an internship or semester abroad. In order to be best prepared for this, the Career Service and the International Office organized a one-hour online lecture in cooperation with the speaker Mr. Oliver Quaas from Texas Instruments.

After Mr. Quaas gave a short overview of the basic procedure of writing an application, he illustrated the essential differences between an application for Germany, UK and USA. In addition to minor details, such as the arrangement of the return address or the date, there are also more serious differences.

For example, did you know that in America it is unusual to add a photo or reveal personal information in the resume? In addition, in the U.S., intensive self-marketing is done in the cover letter and a lot of enthusiasm is expressed. Including references in the application is also common in America. However, a British application is more like a German one. However, a lot of emphasis is placed on a summary, in which the applicant presents his or her own person in a short, concise summary.

Thanks to the internationally active company Texas Instruments, Mr. Quaas was able to obtain first-hand information from his colleagues in the USA and the UK in addition to his own expertise and pass on these tips to the interested students.

The workshop series of the Career Service for the summer semester is already drawing to a close. As a conclusion, there is still a highlight waiting for the students. On June 5 and 6, there will be an application photo shoot with the photographers from TobiGraphy, after which the students will receive three free, edited application photos.
