The professional association for medical technology plays a crucial role in the advancement of medical technology in Germany. It represents the interests of medical technicians and engineers, for example, in standardization committees, provides advice on technical matters, promotes education and networking, and develops quality standards for the certification of medical products.
Moreover, the association supports knowledge transfer through conferences and journals. Thus, at this year's conference in Göttingen on November 23 and 24, 2023, a very diverse range of topics was presented. The two-day event, "Medical Technology - Developments and Trends," covered subjects such as cybersecurity in the operation of medical devices, the acute shortage of skilled professionals, wearables as medical devices, and innovative treatment approaches for children with artificial hearts.
The Landshut Research Group for Medical Technology also submitted several proposals for contributions. In the end, the "AIARLiver" project was invited for presentation. Prof. Dr. Stefanie Remmele, spokesperson for the Research Group for Medical Technology, first spoke about the benefits and challenges of augmented reality-guided surgeries in general. She then introduced the Landshut solution—a fully-integrated AR application for liver surgery. This was an interdisciplinary effort involving students and colleagues from the faculties of Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Interdisciplinary Studies, as recently reported.
