She has a broad didactic education and many years of experience in orthopaedics and trauma surgery: Prof. Dr. med. Viola Freigang, specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery, senior physician and habilitated scientist. From the winter semester 2023/24, she will further develop the "Physician Assistant" course in the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies as a professor.
Prof. Freigang's aim in her role as professor is to meet the future requirements of the healthcare network. "In the coming years, the demand for medical services will increase significantly due to demographic change and an ageing society," she explains. "Physician assistants will then form the link between doctors and nursing staff." Together with the students at Landshut University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Freigang wants to contribute to improving the quality of care in the healthcare sector.
For Freigang, social change only works with the inclusion of innovation
She would like to play a creative role in creating a special learning atmosphere for a new generation of medical professionals. In her opinion, innovation is needed to dynamize medical progress. This can only succeed if a bridge is built between practical training and the clinical integration of students. "The possibilities of using artificial intelligence to standardize work processes in patient care or to further develop diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are immense," says Freigang. The professor therefore sees enormous potential in the digitalization of the healthcare sector. After all, medical care can benefit enormously from cooperation between healthcare providers in the future.
Prof. Freigang also wants to use her university network of cooperation partners in research and teaching to further develop research in the field of patient care and non-medical training as well as in the "Physician Assistant" course.
From student to senior physician: the career of a successful doctor and researcher
Since beginning her studies in human medicine at the LMU and TU Munich, Prof. Freigang has gained a great deal of experience in her profession, research and teaching. She worked as a doctor at the Red Cross Clinic Munich and the Isar Clinic Munich. In 2018, she moved to the University Hospital Regensburg, where she was appointed functional senior physician in 2021. Since 2023, she has been working as a senior physician at the clinics in the Altmühltal Nature Park. She has demonstrated great expertise through numerous scientific articles in high-ranking specialist journals and presentations at national and international congresses.
President Prof. Dr. Fritz Pörnbacher warmly welcomes Prof. Freigang to Landshut University of Applied Sciences: "In Bavaria, only one in four professorships is held by a woman. Prof. Freigang will be a role model for many young women to pursue an academic career, recognize problems and bring about sustainable change for our society."
