Frequently asked questions

At least 2 grades must be available for the pure proof of completed language courses.

You can apply for the UNIcert II certificate as soon as you have successfully completed all 4 UNIcert II courses. To apply, please contact Brigitte Radosai.

You will receive the UNIcert III certificate if you fulfil the following requirements:
1.) Successful completion of all 4 UNIcert III courses
2.) Successful passing of the full-day Comprehensive Exam (= additional exam to obtain the certificate
). The exam is offered once per semester if there are sufficient
participants. To register and make an appointment, please contact
Brigitte Radosai.

Whether, which and how many language courses must be taken depends on the degree programme. Please refer to the SPO (Study and Examination Regulations) for your degree programme. If you have any questions, please contact the academic advisor of your faculty.

In principle, 3 days of absence are permitted.

If you are absent a fourth time, you must talk to your lecturers about possible compensation (however, it is not guaranteed that compensation will be possible. This is at the discretion of the lecturer).

However, it is not possible to be absent more than four times.

In degree programmes where language courses are compulsory, course planning is carried out in consultation with these faculties. Accordingly, you should find a course that you can take.

If you would like to take the language course on a voluntary basis, please understand that we cannot adapt the language planning to the individual timetables of all students. If you are repeatedly unable to attend your desired courses, please contact your own faculty with a request to keep time slots free for languages in the future.

If you do not get your desired course, you will be placed on the waiting list. If someone cancels, you can move up. For face-to-face courses, you can still turn up on the first day. It is possible that not all participants who are registered will actually attend the course. In this case, you can get one of the free places. For online courses, you can contact the lecturers to get access to the Zoom room if someone does not turn up. English courses are usually very full.

We only certify achievements completed at the university.

For certificates for achievements at other institutions, please contact the respective institute.

You cannot submit language courses, e.g. as part of the Abitur, in order to have them recognised as a compulsory foreign language. Depending on the degree programme, language courses are part of the curriculum and must be taken at the university.

If you need a language certificate for a semester abroad, please take the "English test for outgoings" according to the language homepage.

Recognition of other certificates and previous knowledge is a case-by-case decision and only possible in exceptional cases. Please contact the head of the examination board of your faculty.

Yes, if you have fulfilled the compulsory attendance requirement, you can also take the exam in the following semester without attending the course again. The prerequisite is that the course takes place again in the following semester. Please consult with the teacher.

The recognition of examinations already taken must be discussed individually with the lecturer.

If the curriculum of your degree programme prescribes a certain course assignment/sequence, you must adhere to this.

If you take the language courses voluntarily, you can skip a level. However, it is advisable to check your level by taking the placement test. Please bear in mind that you need 4 courses for a certificate and that you may not be able to take them if you start at the highest level straight away.

In this case, the examination is recorded as not taken in the self-service portal. The examination does not count as failed. It is not necessary to officially deregister from the exam, but please let your lecturer know so that nobody is waiting for you on the day of the exam.

In the case of compulsory foreign languages , it is necessary to officially deregister from the examination. Otherwise, a no-show on the examination day counts as a failed examination.

If the UNIcert III level is specified in your SPO (study and examination regulations), you must pass the placement test with a certain number of points. If you do not achieve the required points, you can repeat the placement test in the next semester. Alternatively, you can voluntarily take a UNIcert II course. If you pass this course with a 2.0 or better, you can attend the UNIcert III course in the following semester without having to take the placement test again. The UNIcert II course is not recognised as an alternative to the UNIcert III course, but merely serves as an alternative qualification option for the UNIcert III course.

This can be found in the study plan for your degree programme. If you have any questions, please contact your faculty's International Coordinator or the International Office.
