Landshut University of Applied Sciences receives third doctoral centre

The doctoral centre Sustainable Intelligent Technologies for Resource-Optimised Production (NITRO) completes the trio of doctoral centres at Landshut University of Applied Sciences.

On Tuesday, 16 July, the Bavarian Ministry of Science announced that Landshut University of Applied Sciences, together with Augsburg University of Applied Sciences (THA) and Deggendorf Institute of Technology (THD), will be awarded the NITRO doctoral centre. Landshut has been operating the Doctoral Centre for Digital Technologies and their Application (DigiTech) together with the THD and THA since October 2023. Together with Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences and the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Amberg-Weiden, the university is also responsible for the doctoral programme Digital Innovations for a Changing Society (DIWAG).

Sustainability and resource efficiency as integral building blocks

NITRO's research activities focus on product design, production systems and processes, materials engineering and technology and innovation. The topics of sustainability and resource efficiency form the two integral building blocks of the focal areas. New manufacturing processes, materials and methods are to be developed in interdisciplinary co-operation, which enable resource-saving and environmentally friendly, but also economical production. The research areas of energy, lightweight construction, production and logistics systems as well as electronics and system integration from Landshut now enable doctorates on pioneering topics in order to tackle economic, social and ecological problems.

With the establishment of NITRO, Landshut University of Applied Sciences now has a total of three doctoral centres. These allow professors with strong research skills to independently supervise doctorates and train young academics. The first doctoral students are expected to be admitted to NITRO from the end of the year.

Landshut's research strength

"With NITRO, all faculties and six of the seven research areas at Landshut University of Applied Sciences are represented in a doctoral centre. This illustrates the outstanding research strength at our university, which has been built up and consolidated over the last few years. A total of nineteen professors contribute their academic expertise and research experience to the three centres. This benefits not only (future) academic staff and doctoral students, but also the university's students and the entire region," says Prof. Dr Holger Timinger, Vice President for Research and Transfer, summarising the latest developments.

The three doctoral centres are coordinated under the umbrella of the Landshut Graduate Center. The Graduate Center is the central point of contact for doctoral candidates and researchers and also offers them individual advice.
