The activities and projects in the Medical Technology research area focus on the following topics:

2024 was a successful year for the research group. New projects, new faculties, new doctoral students, new publications! This makes us

The research group is getting new members!
The Medical Technology research group is enriched by new colleagues from the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies. Profs. Drs. Bettina Williger and Nicole Trübswetter are experts in the field of human-machine interaction - an area that plays a central and growing role in medical technology in particular. They bring with them an exciting new research project (HörTrain) and with Martina Tyrach also a new research assistant.

ZIM Project HearMotion started
The aim of the project is to develop an earable for measuring several vital parameters, which can also be used in cases of restricted blood flow. The aim is to be able to determine oxygen saturation even in sepsis or shock patients. The project is headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Breidenassel and is being carried out in collaboration with the Munich-based company Cosinuss GmbH. Maximilian Reiser is joining the team as a doctoral student. Good luck!

Project AIARConcepts started
Over the last 3 years, the research topic ‘AI supported and AR-guided Interventions’ has been successfully established with the collaboration of colleagues and students from 4 different faculties and partners from medicine and industry. Our PhD student, Serouj Khajarian, has already presented our first fully automated prototype at the IEEE Biomed Health Informatics Conference.
The research group is continuing the interdisciplinary project! The focus is now on hardware, software and interaction variants for AR-guided interventions. We are delighted to welcome a new doctoral student, Michael Schwimmbeck, who has already made significant contributions to the project during his Master's degree, and PD Dr. habil. Thomas Wittenberg (Fraunhofer, FAU), who is supporting us as part of the cooperative doctorate.
Project INMOTION started
The Free State of Bavaria is funding the ‘INMOTION - Innovative Motion Tracking Technologies in Medical Applications’ initiative to the tune of €714,977 (Profs. Drs. Auer, Kromer, Breidenassel, Remmele).
In two sub-projects, novel motion correction methods for vital data acquisition and innovative tracking technologies for tracking body and organ movements will be researched.
The project will be supported by doctoral students Serouj Khajarian and Matthias Jahn and hopefully many committed students in theses and project work - welcome on board!
Medical technology network
The medical technology network emerged from a funding project in 2012 and comprises industrial and medical partners in the region. Activities in research and teaching are continuously expanding the network. Our network members benefit from knowledge transfer through regular events such as the medical technology poster symposium and contact with our young talent from various degree programmes such as biomedical engineering, computer science and electrical engineering.
