for the practical semester

When looking for a suitable internship, it is important to consider in advance where your strengths and weaknesses lie. In which areas could the strengths be further developed or the weaknesses minimised? What practical experience could perhaps already be gained? Should this experience be deepened or should new experience be gained in a different field of social work practice? Should the internship semester take place near Landshut, in Germany or abroad?

Once these questions have been clarified, an initial roadmap for the search for a suitable internship position is drawn up. The search itself can be carried out online or through personal contacts.
A special service offered by the Faculty of Social Work is the online internship portal, where social work institutions advertise internship positions that can be applied for directly.

When searching for an internship position, the necessary quality criteria should already be taken into account or, at the latest, more detailed questions should be asked during the interview. The future supervisor should always be present at the interview.

Once all formal framework conditions have been clarified and the internship can be completed at the respective location, the faculty's own internship contract must be filled out legibly and signed in triplicate by the internship location and the student.
The signatures on the contracts are binding for both parties. Specified details must therefore be fulfilled by both parties. Subsequent amendments require the consent of both parties and must be made in writing.

The signed internship contracts are then submitted by the students in the original to the Practice Department of the Faculty of Social Work for review and approval by the specified deadlines. The university must also be informed of any subsequent changes.

The individual training plan is drawn up jointly by the supervisor and student within the first four weeks of the internship. The internship centre provides a certain framework of tasks, learning objectives and requirements that are necessary to understand the respective field of activity during the internship and to acquire the necessary skills. In addition, students should be able to contribute their individual strengths and competences to the internship position through suitable tasks and projects and be allowed to express individual learning objectives.

In the interim reflection, learning objectives and tasks are adapted to the learning success to date. In the final reflection, the individual training plan serves as the basis for the internship evaluation and the review of learning success.

During the internship, students work together with a fixed contact person - the supervisor - in the same work area at the internship location. The supervisor provides an introduction to the work in the field of activity, serves as a practical role model for the implementation of theories and methods in practical work, reflects on the learning successes to date in the context of supervision discussions and gives constructive tips for further development.
At the end of the internship, the supervisor evaluates the students' performance.

During the internship at the internship location, in addition to support from the supervisor, there is also support from the university in the form of courses accompanying the internship.
